Do you have those days where you feel like you've just "had enough" with your current job and are ready to jump right into a new career that you've been dreaming about?
We all have those days. I know I have.
I remember when I was on a career path that became very unfulfilling, and I was ready for a change. I loved working with students as a mentor, and I decided I wanted to become a teacher. I was ready to quit my job that day to pursue a teaching career.
I didn't know it at the time, but I probably wasn't all that ready to take a teaching job right then and there. I hadn't considered essential questions like "how do I get credentialed?" "what is a typical teacher's salary?" "how do you find a teaching job?" and most importantly "will I even like being a teacher?"
Just those questions alone made me feel overwhelmed and lost. I knew I wanted to work with students, and thought teaching would be an ideal career, but I didn't know where to start. After some further consideration, I decided I wasn't ready to quit and become a teacher quite just yet.
However, it was important for me to find out the answers to my questions about becoming a teacher, so I decided I would find ways to "try out" being a teacher before spending too much time and money pursuing a career I didn't even know if I liked yet!
Fortunately, there is no shortage of opportunities for volunteers and tutors to help students in need. I took advantage of these opportunities, and I volunteered as a tutor with a local non-profit organization, in addition to attending informational sessions, and interviewing friends and contacts who were teachers to find out more information.
Ultimately, my research and volunteer experience paid off. When I was finally ready to take the leap into a new career, I had so much useful information that prepared me for the challenges ahead, and a strong network to help me in my new career. Not only that, but I now had experience to know that teaching would be a career that I would enjoy.
What career are you ready to "test drive"?
